Computer operators in Punjab await salaries for seven months

The contractual employees working as computer operator in various branches of the Municipal Corporation (MC) have not got salaries for the past seven months. They say making their both ends meet is a herculean task for them.

The employees, who are working on contract, are not getting salaries due to the state government. A senior official of the MC, who didn’t wish to be named, said a proposal to renew their contract for disbursing the salaries was pending with the director of the Local Bodies Department, due to which salaries were withheld.

As per the norms, the director, local bodies doesn’t raise any objection within 15 days after receiving the proposal, the MC deems it approved but in this case the civic body is awaiting nod for months.

The employees said that in case their proposal was not approved, why they were asked to work.

It is pertinent to mention here that in various branches of the MC, computer operators have been hired on contract basis.

The MC had hired five computer operators last year through a Patiala-based private agency. In May this year, the contract got over and the MC had sent a proposal to renew their contract to the state government, but the nod is still awaited.

The contractual employees are in a fix. They are unable to decide whether to leave their job or wait. Meanwhile, the MC is facing a shortage of funds.
